History

Tandou Limited’s country is situated in a timeless, weather-worn landscape with unique topography, climate and water access. We manage this valued combination of resources sustainably to provide our customers and shareholders with secure returns on their investment.

Tandou - origins and history

Tandou was founded by Mr Bob Smith and Mr Ian Taylor in 1972 and is located 142 km south east of Broken Hill in semi-arid New South Wales. What makes Tandou unique however, is its access to secure water from the nearby Darling River and Menindee Lakes Scheme.

Furthermore, 17,000 hectares (ha) (with 13,280ha developed for irrigation purposes) of the 79,000 ha holding is located in a dry lake bed which hosts deep cracking and self mulching fertile soils with enhanced water holding capacity.

These features position Tandou as an oasis of productive agricultural land within a pastoral holding setting.

In 1987, Tandou was listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) and began producing high value annual and permanent crops using efficient irrigation practices. Since this time Tandou has evolved to become not only one of Australia’s most significant pastoral holdings, but a specialist agricultural services provider, with our experience, skills and expertise available to customers via our agribusiness management services.

Tandou’s vision

It is our vision to:

  • Be a dynamic and profitable agribusiness, producing and marketing a diverse range of products of outstanding quality and value.
  • Be acknowledged as an innovative market leader in agribusiness, by initiating and adopting well researched strategies that deliver positive economic, social and environmental outcomes.

Tandou – contributing to the community and environment

At Tandou, we make sure we manage our limited resources of land and water in a sustainable way to ensure that we continually improve the health of the land for generations to come.

When cropping, we employ a number of methods that enable us to actively increase soil carbon levels, hence improving the soils to create a more robust, sustainable cropping system and investment option for potential shareholders. These measures include:

  • Rotation of crops
  • Permanent cropping beds
  • Reduced tillage
  • Full crop residue retention
  • Compost addition

Our irrigation systems are also designed and operated to minimise the wastage of even a drop of water. All irrigation systems exceed best practice management standards and are operated via the most advanced technological systems available.

With a staff of up to 250 during harvest, and 46 permanent, Tandou is passionate about the community.

Tandou has supported local schools in the region for many years as the company recognises the value of education and the need for support and encouragement of excellence in learning.
